Russkie-Smashers SUB-MARINER (and Namora) "Unseen Invaders"

Let's celebrate the New Year enthusiastically with even MORE Russkie-Smashing...

...featuring Marvel's (retroactively) first mutant, Prince Namor and his cousin, Namora!
Written and illustrated by Subby's creator, Bill Everett, this tale from Atlas' Sub-Mariner V1N37 (1954) shows that, while Namor is as anti-Russkie as he was anti-Axis in World War II, Americans still don't trust him!
Marvel Multiverse note: the aliens resemble the Badoon, officially-introduced in Marvel's Silver Surfer #2 (1968)...who also used invisibility and flying saucers!
Bill Everett brought the Badoon into his final run on Subby in the 1970s...as allies of Namor's evil cousin Prince Byrrah!
Coincidence?
I think not!

Russkie-Smashers MARVEL BOY II "Zero Hour!"

The only thing you can trust about Russkies...
...is that you can't trust Russkies...who apparently would be happy to die to "own the imperialists" (to paraphrase Repugs)!
BTW, though the mag was called Marvel Boy for the first 2 issues, (and he appeared in issues 1 through 6), it became Astonishing as of #3, and remained that way for the rest of the title's 63-issue run!
Written by Stan Lee and illustrated by Bill Everett, this tale from Atlas' Marvel Boy #2 (1950) about cooperation-then betrayal parallels what happened between the Allies and Soviet Russians during World War II (when they acted together against the Axis) and afterward (when they became hostile once the common threat had been eliminated).
You'll note, though the other side is referred to as the "Eastern" Empire, they're clearly written and drawn as Russians/Soviets!
Bob Grayson was the second character to bear the "Marvel Boy" name, the first one being a Joe Simon/Jack Kirby creation who made only two appearances during the 1940s.
Since he appeared (and disappeared) before the 1953 revival of the "Big Three" (Captain America/ Human Torch/Sub-Mariner) he could be considered Timely/Atlas/Marvel's final Golden Age superhero!

Reading Room Annex: SPACE BUSTERS in "Remember Makano"

Click HERE for MORE SpaceBuster action!
From "Remember the Alamo!" to "Remember the Maine!" most wars have one such atrocity which ends up inspiring even greater levels of valor against an evil foe.
The War Against Belzar was no different...
Art by Murphy Anderson, who was also doing the Buck Rogers newspaper strip at the time.
The remaining stories are by other artists, but Murphy did a couple of one-page features we'll be presenting at the end of this series.

Reading Room Annex: SPACE BUSTERS in "Charge of the Battle Women"

Part Two of the Mars Campaign from SpaceBusters #1. Part One can be found HERE.
It's a fascinating look at male-female relationships as shown in comic books of the 1950s, proving those Lois Lane comics and their attitudes towards women weren't an aberration.
BTW, you'll notice the Amazons on the comic's cover (shown below) are wearing considerably less...armor! ;-)
Tomorrow, the conclusion of the Mars Campaign!

Reading Room Annex: SPACE BUSTERS in "Empress of Belzar"

SpaceBusters was a war comic set in the future.
Think of it as a less-sophisticated version of Starship Troopers, sorta "Sgt Fury or Sgt Rock in Space"!
Interestingly, it featured a woman (albeit noncombatant) as part of the front-line team.
As to the plot...Belzar has invaded our Solar System, managing to conquer Mars, with Earth next in line.
However, Earth's military is about to launch a counter-attack...
All three stories  in #1 take place on Mars.
We'lll be posting the other two later this week.

Don't forget to check out our
which also features SpaceMan Jet!
