Reading Room: PHANTOM LADY "Knights of the Crooked Cross"

MORE Phantom Lady action from her first issue...
Classic "good girl" art by Matt Baker.
The writer is probably Ruth Roche.
The other feature in this issue was a Blue Beetle story, which we'll present in the near future.
The Phantom Lady will return...

featuring goodies emblazoned with the cover art from this issue of Phantom Lady.

  1. Thank you for the amazing Baker Phantom Lady! This is the first time I saw her Phantom Rocket Car. It's so inconspicuous!
I'd love to learn more about the assumed writer, Ruth Roche. I really like what she does with these stories. Do you have any more info about her?

  2. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I can't believe you're going to post the complete Fox Phantom lady's by Baker!!!! I'm such a huge fan of them but they are very hard to come by in affordable editions!
Baker has just done amazing things! Not only does he have a beautiful style that shows off the ladies, he has a great way with panel layouts. These Phantom Lady pages also have wonderful coloring. It creates wonderful effects while sticking pretty closely to the primary colors.
Ruth Roche is another great aspect of the mix. Her feminine sensibilities work to very great affect by allowing the sexy Phantom Lady to be a much more human and likable character than your average sex symbol. I've looked for more info on Roche but came up with very little to nil on the net. Do you have any more info on her? Who was this great writer and early feminist?
I guess Phantom Lady is not only a classic in the history of comics but also revolutionary for having possibly the first Black comic artist and a woman writer to boot!

  3. If you want to know more about Ruth Roche, the Fantaagraphics book FOUR COLOR FEAR by John Benson and Greg Sadowski, has an article about her and partner Jerry Iger, who ran the Iger Comics shop.
