Reading Room: HELL-RIDER "Final Chapter"

Our Hero has been trapped, powerless, in a dungeon...
...but now, all hell is about to break loose in the cataclysmic conclusion!
A couple of notes:
1) Marion (ButterFly) Michaels says in a thought balloon that she met Hell-Rider "..while I was making like The ButterFly!"
Not in the book as printed.
Perhaps there were a couple of pages cut for space, but that's not what happened in any of the connected stories in #1.
2) Marion doesn't have time to don her ButterFly costume and join in the fight.
Just as well since she didn't have time to refuel or recharge the costume!
3) Deke of the Wild Bunch says he recognizes the unmasked Claw...except Deke never saw the Claw unmasked!
The concluding chapter of the multi-part story from Skywald's Hell-Rider #1 (1971) was written by Gary Friedrich and illustrated by Ross Andru (pencils), Mike Esposito (inks) and Bill Everett (greytones).

Reading Room: HELL-RIDER "Introducing the Wild Bunch"

You've met Brick Reese aka Hell-Rider...
...now say "Hi" to his brawlin' biker buddies.
But do it fast, 'cause they're rather busy...
You'll note the "Claw Salute" is a raised middle finger...
The fate of the entire country rests on Slink's slim shoulders?
Is he up to the task?
Or, will the Wild Bunch's sacrifice be for naught?
Are Ruby and Marion Michaels aka ButterFly safe from the Claw?
And, what of Hell-Rider, still trapped and powerless in a dungeon?
Answers to these and other questions...
Tomorrow!

Reading Room: PHANTOM LADY "Saturnalia of Sin"

With a title like that, how can anyone say comics aren't educational?
(A "Saturnalia" is a major-level party, a shindig people will talk about for years to come)
Seems like a kool way to close out the final tale from the final Fox issue of Phantom Lady!
The final story from Phantom Lady #23 (1949) is by writer Ruth Roche and artist Jack Kamen.
Next week, the final Fox Comics tale from All Top Comics #17!
After that, the very first Phantom Lady story from Police Comics #1!
Then, we begin the complete run of the Ajax/Farrell Phantom Lady!

Reading Room: PHANTOM LADY "Adventure of the Jade Maiden"

Since there were no Phantom Lady 3-D comics, we skipped last week...
...(and if there's anyone who would've been fantastic in 3-D it's her!)
Nonetheless, we're back with the second of three tales from Phantom Lady #23, the final Fox issue!
Story probably by Ruth Roche, art most likely by Jack Kamen.

Reading Room: PHANTOM LADY & SPIDER WIDOW Conclusion

Feature Comics #71
The Spider Widow and Phantom Lady, brought together to battle a menace threatening PL's father, US Senator Knight, have also developed a rivalry for the affections of The Raven.
Note: the order is changed this month as the Spider Widow tale comes first in story continuity.
Also, even though most sources list this as a Frank Borth job, it's not signed, as most of his work is, and the art style is a bit...off.
So while Borth probably wrote and penciled the story, he probably didn't ink it.
Now for the Phantom Lady installment...
Police Comics #22
The art here seems to be a combination of Frank Borth and Phantom Lady creator Arthur Peddy.
Both Spider Widow and Phantom Lady would make one more appearance in their respective series before being canceled.
While Phantom Lady was revived and revised at Fox Publishing, the Spider Widow hasn't appeared in a new story since.
We hope you enjoyed this look at the first version of Phantom Lady, and we'll be returning to the Fox Phantom Lady series in January, 2012...
